Cascadia Project: Life, Culture and Art of the Tsimshian - A Workshop with Ed E. Bryant (Hagwil Gaà)

 

The CCAC is proud to welcome Tsimshian artist Ed. E. Bryant for a four-day workshop on January 20-23, 2009.

 

The workshop features activities such as pendant carving, storytelling with masks, singing and dancing and in-depth and first-hand information on the life, history, culture and art of First Nations of Canada’s Pacific Northwest.

 

The workshop will take place in Room 407, C 5.3.

Tuesday, Jan 20

Talk + welcome song, dance

- About where I am from and about my people: The Tsimshian

- Regalia exhibition, peace song

- Introduction to Tsimshian language

- Artistic view, about my art and designing

 

Wednesday,  Jan 21

    - Historical and present culture of the Tsimshian

    - Migration of my people from the Skeena river

    - Contact + trade between various tribes

    - European contact and its impact on the Tsimshian

    - Group song, dance exhibition

    - Mask exhibition

 

Thursday, Jan 22

- Pendant Carving

- Designing and form identity

- Demonstration of carving tools

- Storytelling with masks (students perform) 

Friday, Jan 23

- Gathering for the feast

- Meaning of feasting

- Exploring natural medicine plants

- Tasting of seaweed + devil´s club
