Mediation

Texts are made, and literary texts are more than things made out of words and ideas. Central focus at both the Saarbrücken NALK and CCAC has been on various issues concerned with the mediation of literature and culture – avenues, conditions, media, criteria of selection, authors and the constitution of texts, including translations and translators. We have been studying Kulturpolitik in every sense concerning the exchange of texts between North America and Europe – and vice versa. This involves the study of textual theory and criticism as well as publisher’s policies, the making of canons, questions of copyright, and the culturally determined horizons of readerly and writerly expectations governing a text. Our work so far has resulted in several international conferences (1998, 2002, 2004, 2006) as well as a considerable number of publications.
